Weekly Update: Holidays Around the World

It is almost time for Winter Break!  As we have been counting down, we have been learning about some Holidays Around the World.  We started with News2You last Friday, talking about the Nutcracker Ballet from Germany.  This week we learned a little about Christmas, Kwanzaa, Las Posadas, Hannukah, and St. Lucia Day.  One resource we used was an interactive website with information about Christmas, Hannukah, and Kwanzaa: http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/activity/celebrate-winter-holidays.  Students enjoyed clicking on different pictures for each holiday. We made Nutcracker vests (pictures coming soon), kinaras, and pointesettias. Today we will play dreidel and finish up some holiday cards we are making for our Recess Buddies.

Tomorrow we will celebrate the upcoming break with our Recess Buddies after recess. They will come by our room and we will share the cards we made.  If timing allows, we will play a large group game. This will also be an opportunity to meet with small groups of the Buddies to do a final check in before the new year.

I posted some pictures from the week in the “Class Pictures!” section. Make sure to check there when you visit the site as I will try to keep current picture updates coming.  Also, make sure to scroll down on this home page to make sure you are up to date on all posts.

Reminder: the Edison Art Show is tonight!  We will have art work displayed with the second-graders’.  Room 125 worked hard on their art with Ms. Mansfield, and a bit in our classroom.  I hope you can come see your child’s hard work!

What a great start to the year we have had!  I am so proud of all of the students in Room 125. We have grown so much as a class these first few months of school.  Keep up the support you are giving at home, and the communication with me to support your children at school. I am so grateful for all of the support you provide to your children and our classroom. I look forward to a great start to 2012 with all of your children and your families!

Have a great Winter Break!

DonorsChoose Project #2

Good news!  We have a second project up on DonorsChoose!  Our first project was such a huge success that people were telling me that they were trying to give to our classroom, but were too late because we got funded so quickly!  Thank you to everyone who supported that first project…the difference that those supplies make is very visible and so appreciated.

Now we are looking to get more supplies for “hands-on” learning.  As you know, kids learn best when they can physically interact with their learning. This is especially true in our room, which is why I am asking for supplies which will allow me to increase our hands-on opportunities.

Check out our project and support our classroom: http://www.donorschoose.org/donors/proposal.html?id=697856#.  Also, spread the word!  Both for this project, and for this resource. This is a great resource that can support so many kids, so share the knowledge!

**Thursday: I just found out that if you enter the code “REALSIMPLE” when you check out, we will get a dollar for dollar match of your donation! Let everyone know as you encourage others to support our class!**

Thank you again to everyone who supported Project #1.  There is no pressure/need for you to give again to this project. This second project is an opportunity for different supplies, and different classroom supporters.  I appreciate everything everyone has already done to support our classroom already, and am especially grateful to all you wonderful parents who do wonderful things for your children and our classroom every single day!  Spread the word for support for our class!

Thank you for all you do!

The Polar Express

Come by Room 125 to check out The Polar Express Quilt we worked on all week for Literacy Night.  Underneath the trains each student wrote about their favorite part of the book.  Our quilt was quite the hit at Literacy Night…many students and families took the time to read and explore.

Next week we will be learning about Holidays Around the World.  Please take a minute to e-mail me some of your family holiday traditions, so that we can tie them into our theme next week.  Thanks! kelsey_wales@dpsk12.org

Welcome to our new site!

Welcome to our new classroom website!  A BIG thank you to Ms. Kalisha, who worked hard to help get this up and running!

Hopefully this site will better allow us to share daily and weekly updates, pictures and resources while allowing us to become more paperless in the classroom.

Check this site daily as I will post class notes, pictures, school events, and more to keep everybody in the loop of what’s going on in Room 125. Any daily/weekly updates will appear here on the first page.

Thank you for your patience throughout the website transfer process.  Feel free to ask questions and offer input about what you’d like to see on this site.
