What's going on in Room 125?

Weekly Update, 10-18-12

This week, we focused on the Edison CARRES trait of being “community-minded”. We helped rake leaves in front of the school and got ready for the Penny Harvest (see below). Friday we will be getting ready for Fall Festival for our classroom community.  We’ve been practicing recognizing our friends’ good work with thumbs ups and “good job”s. Please see the following information about upcoming events and let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you to those of you who have signed up for conferences! I am looking forward to chatting with you about your child!  We will celebrate successes, talk about things we’re working on, share notes from inclusion teachers, and review IEP progress reports.  Conferences will last 30 minutes. Please let me know if you have any questions about when your conference is or what we will be doing. If you haven’t signed up yet, make sure you do so ASAP!  There is still a slot open on Tuesday.

Fall Festival

Fall Festival is tomorrow after school behind Edison!  Remember, this is our biggest classroom fundraiser with the school. It is also a fun way to get to know other students, teachers, and families in the school community, not to mention a chance to celebrate Fall/Halloween with costumes, candy, and games!  Hope to see you there for popcorn (our classroom booth) and fun!

Penny Harvest

As mentioned last week in Thursday folders, the Penny Harvest is coming to Edison! This is sponsored by Edison’s Good Citizens club (run by our very own Ms. Kalisha and Ms. Freeh) and is a great opportunity for us to show our community mindedness. We are asking students and parents to collect any spare change and bring it into our class jar. Th emoney reaised will go to support a cause (picked by Edison students) or towards a community service project!  Room 125 voted to support kids, animals, or the earth (3 way tie!).  We worked together to decorate our jar and are excited to add change for our cause. Any change will help us in our mission to be community-minded.

Fall Break

…is next week! We will not have school next Thursday or Friday. Enjoy the long weekend!

Make Sure You Know School Info

Just as a reminder, school and classroom updates are available in a variety of ways.  Make sure to stay up to date on class and school happenings. In addition to these weekly updates (posted on Thursdays) important events are also listed on the calendar tab of this site. Make sure to check Thursday folders for important school info. You will also find updates about school events (such as Fall Festival, Penny Harvest, Picture Day, etc) here. Finally, the Edison website (http://edison.dpsk12.org/) has a detailed calendar as well as lots of other school info. If you ever have questions about info and events, just ask me!  The things that come home in Thursday folders or that is on the Edison site is important to our room too, and I would be happy to share more details if need be!

Absences and Tardies

As we are getting into cold weather and illness season, your child me be late or absent from school. Please make sure to call the office (720-424-7784) to let them know why your child is missing school so that it will count as an excused absence. If you do not call the office their absence will be marked as unexcused. Also, remember attendance is taken at 8:45 each morning, and pick up is at 3:30 in the afternoon. If you arrive to school after 8:45, make sure to sign your child in before dropping him off at class. Likewise if you need to pick up before 3:30, you must first sign him out at the office.

Let me know if you have any questions! See you soon!

Weekly Update, 10-11-12

This week we talked about fall and made some cool artwork which is hanging in the hallway. We collected, sorted, and investigated leaves for science and read “Cat’s Colors” by Pat Cabrera for story time. We continue to work on the voice scale and top/bottom.  There are some exciting events coming up in the next week…check it out!

Picture day!

Picture day is tomorrow, October 12!  We have been practicing smiling all week and are ready to be stars for the camera! If you have any advice for helping your child take a good picture, let us know!

As mentioned in my note home this week, conferences will be held next Thursday, October 18 and the following Tuesday, October 23. I am looking forward to talking with your family,  celebrating your child’s successes, and collaborating about more ways to support them at school and at home. For this round of conferences you may opt to come to school as usual or set up a home visit. I would love to see students’ homes and learn more about your family if we do a home visit! Please let me know which day and option you prefer as soon as possible so we can set up our meeting!

Fall Festival

Fall festival is next Friday, October 19th after school! This is our biggest classroom fundraiser and is a lot of fun!  For the second year in a row Room 125 will be in charge of the popcorn table.  All of the money that we make will go directly to our classroom. This is money that we will use for apps and cases for our new iPads!  (Remember, though we are very fortunate to have 4 new iPads coming our way, we are reliant on fundraisers such as this to purchase the “extras” like apps and protection). There will be all kinds of other fun tables and activities going on behind the school. Please stay or come for a bit after school to support our classroom, have fun, and meet other students and teachers from your child’s classes!

Shawn will be celebrating his 8th birthday on Wednesday!

Classroom Supplies

As we get deeper into Fall and Cold season, we are in need of Clorox-type wipes and/or cleaning spray to keep our room free of germs. If you are either to send either/both in, we would greatly appreciate it!

Please let me know if you have any questions about the upcoming events. I am looking forward to seeing you for conferences and Fall festival!

Have a wonderful weekend,

Ms Wales

Weekly Update, 10-4-12

This week, Room 125 continued to explore, get to know our Recess Buddies, continue to become comfortable with inclusion classes, and learn the letter C.  We used our senses to explore during science (see updated pictures), while practicing individual communication goals. We continued to practice the voice scale, practice our friends’ names by playing London Bridge, and practice listening by dancing the Hokey Pokey.  Now in our third week of this year’s Recess Buddies program, it is exciting to see students from Room 125 and 5th grade become more familiar with each other.  Students continue to have success in their mainstreamed classes, and I am excited to see them continue to become more involved with their friends in these classes.

This week we focused more on math during morning centers. We are working hard on one-to-one correspondence, counting, and number recognition.  These are important skills for school and life success, so the more practice, the better! Any way you can practice at home will be a huge support for your child.  Remember, when practicing counting coach your child to touch each object with one finger, one time, while saying only one number. This will help develop the concept of one-to-one correspondence, which is critical in both math and reading.  If your child counts too fast or too slow (e.g. their counting does not match up with their object touching), help them start over so that they can be 100% successful. Also, identify numbers wherever you can!  Many students are working on telling the difference between teens and twenties (e.g. 17 vs 27, 18 vs 28, etc). Constant identification and practice will help them master this skill!  Let me know if you have any questions about working on math at home.
