Weekly Update: 9-26-13

Hello!

This isn’t much of an update since I’ve only been here one day. Thanks so much for being patient and understanding this week. Thank your kids too!

I finally uploaded a few photos from our first week of school. I’ll try to be more regular about this, but it’s often hard to teach and document!

A good amount of 5th graders submitted Recess Buddies applications. I will look through these and hopefully get things started by the end of next week.

Please let me know if you have any questions or things to share for this weekly update, since you were here more than me this week;)

Have a great day!

Still fighting crime….

Tomorrow should really be the last day. We started deliberations today and just have to wrap up.

I miss everyone so tell them hello and thank you for being such awesome kids even when I’m not there. Can’t wait to see everyone again!

Jury Duty again!

Ay ay ay…I got chosen for a criminal trail, meaning I will be out tomorrow and possibly (but hopefully not!) Wednesday. So sorry for this inconvenience! So thankful to our wonderful paras who keep things running smoothly.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, I’ll just have to really post some pictures this week as my “I’m sorry”:)

Tell those kids I miss them and I’ll see them soon!

Our amazing paras will also be there to help things run smoothly. Feel free to let me know how it goes. Looking forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday!

Weekly Update: 9-19-13

Hello!

Can I just start by saying that I am so PROUD of everyone in Room 125! We started an all new schedule this week, which is much more individualized and (I believe) better serves everyone’s learning and other needs. This schedule is very different even for students who have been in my class before. But everyone is doing great! I am so impressed with how much growth I can see in everyone with school routines, especially checking schedules and getting to work. Now that we’re our first month is coming to a close, we are shifting our focus from strictly routines and behavior to more content learning too. Did I mention I’m proud of these kids?! Thank you for the support you provide by sending your child to school each day, establishing routines at home, and promoting school values across environments. Our teamwork is so important, and you can see it in all of these students’ growth!

There have been some circumstances where some of you have had to pick up your child early from school. Thank you for communicating this with me, and making sure that your child is able to come to school even if they have to leave a little early, rather than missing the whole day. Starting tomorrow, we are going to change this pick up routine slightly. With the new schedule I’d like to keep students rockin and rollin with school routines and activities until the end of the day. This can get tricky when early pick up happens in the room. So, starting tomorrow, when you sign out your child in the office, they will call me and I will likely send your child to the office with a para for pick-up, as is done school-wide, rather than you coming into the classroom. The intent is that we can keep up classwork with the students that are here until the end of the day. Please let me know if you have any questions about this!

If you have extra plastic grocery bags around the house, Room 125 can give them a home! We often use these bags for soiled clothing when the need arises, and we seem to have a shortage! So, we can help you recycle if you have some.

Thank you for your continued communication and collaboration. This has meant a lot to me (and your child!) as I continue to strive for the best schedule and programming for every student so that we can continue to challenge them as much as possible. I’m looking forward to continuing to watch everyone grow!

Have a great evening,

Ms Wales

Weekly Update: 9-13-13

Happy Friday!

Thank you for continuing to hold school as a priority, even with all sorts of strange weather! It is so important that students come to school everyday, and it is wonderful that you are able to do that, even during tricky situations.

I am continuing to tweak with our schedule, trying to find the best way to meet everyone’s needs and hold everyone to high expectations. With different students and grade levels, this takes time to make in a truly meaningful way. I am working with the school psychologist to create the best environment for all of the students. Thanks to these great kids while we figure things out!

A few other notes:

1. Tomorrow (Saturday) will be “Low Sensory Morning” at the Children’s Museum from 8-10 am. Admission is free for families of children with special needs. RSVP to Traci McGrath at tracim@cmdenver.org or 303-561-0108.

2. I am going to try to upload some pictures from our first few weeks under the class photos section. My computer has been acting a little strange, so if they’re not up by the end of the day, feel free to pester me.

3. After recess the past week we (kinder and 1st graders) enjoyed popsicles (thank you Lukas!) on the rug. This has been a nice way to transition back inside. We would love some help with this tradition through popsicle (or other snack) donations. If there’s something your child enjoys for a little after recess treat, we would love for you to send some to school for your child or for the class. Thank you in advance!

4. We talked as a team about communication with peers at lunch. Ms. Kalisha brought a great idea back from a workshop. When packing your child’s lunch, you can attach a short phrase or picture to certain items to serve as conversation pieces. For example, a picture of an apple to their apple juice. We can work with peers to ask “What kind of juice do you have?” and the student to point to that picture to respond. This is a general idea that would look very different for each student, so if you think this is something you’d like to do, let’s chat about a good way for this to fit your child’s needs!

5. I will be talking to 5th grade classes next week about Recess Buddies. I will let you know how this progresses!

Let me know if you have any questions. Have a great (and safe/dry) weekend!

Weekly Update: 9-5-13

Good morning and happy end of week 2!

This week we spent more time settling into class routines. We are starting to solidify our afternoon schedule and still molding the morning as we continue to raise the bar. We’ve had some class successes with routines and growth with listening to teachers! We are trying to teach and show the importance of the rules to everyone. Please continue to talk/sign about these at home, so at the least students can see that these are valued both at home and at school.  Here are a few other notes:

1. Please make sure to check your child’s homework notebook daily and write me a quick note about their morning and/or evening. As you have likely seen, drop off and pick up can be very busy times and it is often hard to talk to everyone as I’d like. These notebooks are an important means of communication, and I appreciate your diligence in your daily contribution.

2. Please remember that if you need to drop off your student late (after 8:45) or pick them up early (before 3:30) you first must stop by the office to sign them out. This must happen before coming to the classroom. This is school procedure and helps maintain the safety of all our of students.

3. Here is some information from the PTA:

-Sign up for the school directory by September 15th following this link: http://bit.ly/1emrgx6. (The school directory is a good tool for setting up things like play dates!)

-Link to the Edison Family Forum: bigtent.com/groups/edfamdenver

4. As many of you know I am dancing with a rock-climbing dance company called the Ascendance Project (www.ascendanceproject.com). We are having a show next Wednesday, September 11th. Several people have asked about tickets. You can purchase tickets at http://www.chautauqua.com/theater_and_dance.php. If you do so this Friday, Saturday, or Sunday enter the promo code “climb” before check out for $5 off. Thanks for you interest! It would be great to see some of you there!

Thank you for your continued support and communication! Let me know if you have any questions.

Have a great day,

Ms. Wales
