Weekly Update: 5-22-14

Field Day is tomorrow. Parents are welcome to attend. Info has gone home in Thursday folders and is available through Edison’s website, but let me know if you have questions. Students will be participating with their general education class. Make sure to send them in tennis shoes!

Horseback riding next week will be on Wednesday as it is a holiday Monday and we have a session to make up. Please dress and pack accordingly on that day.

End of the Day parties are a work in progress. Our Recess Buddy party is scheduled for June 3 at 12:15. I have heard back from two families about attending. If you would like to attend, please let me know today so we can be sure to have enough food. I hope to schedule our class party once I know the schedule of everyone else’s class.

Enrichment Day is next Friday. Due to some scheduling changes, I am still solidifying some details with this. I will post the update as soon as that is finalized.

Summer programs: I have been asking around about summer programs for kids with autism. I have heard back about three resources. I don’t know anything about them personally, but seem like some good options. Here they are:

Survey and classroom directory: If you would like to be included in our class directory to be able to contact each other in the summer (e.g. playdates etc), please e-mail me ASAP if you haven’t already. Please also take some time in the next few weeks to fill out the classroom survey. I e-mailed about both of these things this week.

Pictures: I just got a bunch of pictures e-mailed from Ms Raegan from the year. I’ll try to post today (or at least soon!). Just check the Class Photos tab for that update.

Phew! Lots going on at the end of the year. Always ask questions if you have any! Enjoy the long weekend:)

Parent Survey

As we rapidly approach the last day of school, I am reflecting on the past year and starting to think about the the year to come. I want to be sure that I am supporting your child and you the best I can. Since we will be together next year as well, I would love your feedback about this school year, the classroom, my teaching practices, and more. Your collaboration and feedback is so critical to your child’s success and will help me best support your families as your child’s teacher!

As such, I have created an anonymous survey about some aspects of the school year. I will e-mail you all the link. It would mean so much to me if you all could take a few minutes in the next few weeks to provide your feedback about this school year so that I have some ideas going into next year. If there are things not included on the survey that you would like to share, feel free to write me a note about that too!

Let me know if you have any troubles with the survey. It seemed simple enough to make, but I am new to Survey Monkey.

Thanks for all you do!

Ms Phyllis

Just a quick update on our regular para sub, Ms Phyllis…

She will be joining us on MWF basically until the end of the year. Ms Mary had a school obligation come up; fortunately Ms Phyllis (who is our regular sub and knows more about the kids and our routines than most!) was able to take most of those days. So that’s why we’ll be seeing a lot of her these next few weeks. Today was her first day for this stretch. She must be a regular, because the kids don’t even seem phased:)

Let me know if you have any questions.

Update on Sub Today

Bummer news: I am sick. Very sad to be missing the Learning Lab that I wrote about yesterday, but just can’t seem to pull through in time. So, there will still be the sub, but I will not be in the building. I will try to check my e-mail periodically if you have any questions. Sorry!

Sub Tomorrow

I am working with my principal and special education support partner to start up a learning community for the teachers of students with autism in the district. I think our continued learning, collaboration, and resource sharing can be hugely beneficial to our students. Tomorrow will be our first trial with our “Learning Lab.” Several other teachers of students with autism are coming to Edison in the morning. We will spend the first part of the Lab discussing some relevant articles to mainstreaming students with autism. Then, we will discuss my classroom and the teachers will observe me teach. Following that we will discuss the observation and engaged in reflection of our teaching practices. My hope is we can get something going for semi-regular Learning Labs to continue our learning for our students.

I guess I’m excited, so I had to share. But what you need to know is that I will have a sub tomorrow (Thursday) morning. Please drop off as normal. I will see you after school!

Let me know if you have questions.

Horseback riding tomorrow

The way the weather is looking, we may have to cancel riding tomorrow. I will post as soon as I know for sure. Please prepare your child that it will be a surprise and we’ll have to “go with the flow.” Thanks!
