What's going on in Room 125?

The News!

I am so touched by the surprise from the news today. I’m not really sure who knew about it apart from Lorina, who nominated me, but I was completely suprised! The kids did great! Super cute. I’m hoping to get a copy so I can share with them. I wonder what close ups they’ll put in since many students went right up to look in the camera:)

Our segment is supposed to air next Friday at 7 am on Fox 31 for “Good Day Colorado.” Hopefully it will be online too so I can share with the kiddos, who I bet will enjoy seeing themselves on the news.

They did so great with the suprise. I am so touched and honored to be recognized. Thank you so much to Lorina for the nomination, and to all of you for all you do every day to make teaching your kids possible.

So much gratitude,

Ms Wales

No Notes Today

As you know, I am working to get the Recess Buddy program up and running next week. I will be having a meeting with the new Buddies at the end of the day. As such, I will not have time to write notes in the homework notebooks. Please talk to me or send me an e-mail if you have questions about the day.

Sorry about that!

Weekly Update: 8-24-14

Hello! It’s the one day early weekly update!

I’m going list format, since I have a lot of not totally related thoughts!

1. Ms Valerie has taken over the K-1 snack center. She has a lot of knowledge and resources about nutrition and has been sending materials home from that center.

2. I would love your feedback about homework! I am ready to get this more organized and effective. Here are the homework choices I see:

-general education homework, completed as is

-general education homework, you draw ideas from there and modify

-general education homework, I suggest modifications

-general education homework and Ms Wales created homework

-Ms Wales created homework

-general suggestions to work on.

Please let me know what you think will work best for you.

3. I have sorted through Recess Buddies applications. We will hopefully have a meeting at the end of this week and get it started next week. I’ll keep you posted!

4. Lots of upcoming dates below (I know I still need to update calendar!):

-Monday, Sept 29: The news is coming to film our classroom. You should have talked to Ms Barbara about this. Please let her know if this is NOT ok.

-Wednesday, October 1: picture day (please let me know if you have tips to help your child smile!)

-Thursday and Friday, October 2 and 3: I will be at the Autism Conference in Denver and will have a sub that day. Our awesome paras will still be here to help things run smoothly.

-Monday, October 6: kindergarten field trip

-Tuesday, October 7: hearing and vision screening

That’s a lot of things! I don’t have a lot of time to put the details in now, but please let me know if you have questions. Thanks!

Weekly Update: 9-18-14

Hello families! Here are some updates from the week.

1. We had our first Shelter-in-Place (severe weather) drill at the beginning of the week. We also had a fire drill. We talk about how important it is to listen to your teacher so everyone can stay safe. Thumbs up for the weather drill for everyone! I spoke to you about the fire drill if this was tough for your child. We’ll have plenty of opportunities for more practice!

2. Due to some overcrowding in Free Choice, I have made some changes in how this is run. While students can still choose the trampoline, couch, chalk, or break, toys choices must be brought back to their desk. Everyone really seemed to roll with this change!

3. Here is our special service schedule, so you know when those providers are in our room: Tuesday/Karin(speech-language), Wednesday/Karin and Paula (occupational therapy), Thursday/Cordero (social skills/school pysch).

I often try to provide general ideas for things you can work on at home. This week, I would like to provide three levels of writing/drawing ideas. If you are unsure of what level seems most appropriate for your child, or would like specific suggestions for your child, please let me know:

-Watch as you draw a picture and narrate what you are doing. Draw something your child really enjoys to get them motivated about the concept of writing to communicate.

-Draw a picture about something that happened. The more details included the better (e.g. add hair, shoes, glasses, grass, leaves…). Talk about the drawing. From here, you can write to label parts of the picture.

-Write a sentence or paragraph about something that happened. You can support this by having them first draw a picture and then write to describe it, look at a photograph, or draw a picture once the sentences are finished.

The more talking when writing the better! So much is about comprehension and communication…and the more practice in a variety forms the better!

Let me know if you have any questions. Have a great end to the week!

Weekly Update: 9-11-14

Hello!

Let me fill you in a bit about the past week of school…

It is hard for me to believe this is only the third week of school, since there has been so much improvement in school behavior in relationship to our classroom rules. When you see your child’s notebook and/or behavior chart shows they had a great day super celebrate this! I am very proud of the many great days students have had!

While we are still largely focusing on our rules, routines, and structures, more and more academic pieces are filling in. I have been working to assess students on their IEP goals and find the best way to structure reading, writing, math, and/or communication centers into our schedule. We continue to focus on the “first work, then Free Choice” relationship as we start these things.

Something I am still working to organize is homework. I want to apologize for any confusion that has come with this. I am trying to find the best way to align with general education homework and IEP goal focused homework and how these overlap. I want to be sure that students have the opportunity to participate in grade level homework, especially for those who have closely related IEP goals, however I still need to find the best system to communicate with other teachers about this. The one thing I do know is the “due Thursday” note on the homework pocket is not relevant. For the most part, due dates are noted on the homework itself. Feel free to offer feedback about what works for you or ask questions about what is getting set home. As mentioned, my priority right now is classroom scheduling and routines…as we settle more into this I will focus more attention on homework, so thank you for your patience as we get this going.

Call for supplies: If you have any plastic bags (e.g. shopping bags) at home, we would love them here at school! We like to have a good stock of these for dirty clothes or other messy things.

Thank you for your collaboration with the start of the year. As our schedule starts to look more like our “real” schedule, I get more and more excited for what is to come this year!

Let me know if you have questions.

-Ms Wales
