I’m excited to start this week’s update by sharing a cool resource. Did you know Sesame Street is introducing a new muppet with autism? Awesome! I loved playing around with these links. Some of the stories are awesome for sharing information about autism and different kids. I love the idea of having lots of different friends. Just another tool for sharing;) http://autism.sesamestreet.org/

Also, did I share this video already? A parent shared with me and I think it’s a great way to explain the things I always want to explain about our students. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0w6carvS8k&sns=em

Please keep resources like this coming my way!

In other news…

Fall Festival is tomorrow! I so hope you can join us out back after school for this classroom/school fundraiser. Our classroom booth is pumpkin decorating. Stop by and buy a pumpkin….all the tickets go straight back to our classroom! I will also be in the dunk booth for first grade at 4:15. Wouldn’t mind being dunked by a familiar face:) Feel free to wear costumes after school for the fun!

In science this week we explored “helpful” and “harmful”, continuing our weather unit. We talked about how wind and rain can be both helpful and harmful and gave examples for each, including sorting pictures. Helpful and Harmful are great concepts to explore beyond weather too!

Parent-teacher conferences are around the corner. Stay tuned for sign up times. Conferences will be held November 4th and 5th after school.

First grade sight words this week: go, stop, yes, no, me, find

First grade letter sounds: a, m, t, s

Other lists vary by child…please let me know if you’d like a list for your child!

As always, send any questions, ideas, or feedback my way!

Hope to see you tomorrow!

Lots of fun things coming next week!

  1. No school for students on Monday or Tuesday.
  2. Fall Festival after school on Friday!

Fall Festival is one of our biggest classroom fundraisers. Emphasis on the FUN:) Join after school for Halloween fun behind Edison. Classrooms will have different games and activities set up that students can participate in with tickets (that you buy outside). Feel free to dress up in Halloween costumes for the event! Our classroom is bringing back our pumpkin decorating booth. Come support our room and others!

Also, I am looking for help with our booth!

  1. I am accepting donations for the pumpkins that we will have at our booth to minimize how much comes out of the funds we raise that day (therefore maximizing what we have left to use for our classroom).
  2. Volunteers to run the booth. For part of the festival (4:15-4:30) I will be in the first grade dunk tank. So, I would love a volunteer or two to keep the booth running during that time. Let me know if you are available then, and/or if you’re interested in helping for any other part of the festival.

Here are some highlights we have learned about this week:

  1. The weather. Key words and concepts include temperature, thermometer, meteorologist, weather tools (thermometer, anemometer, wind vane, rain gauge), types of weather.
  2. Sight words. First grade focus: go, stop, yes, me. Second grade focus: of, was, you, that.
  3. Addition. The concept of putting two groups together using objects.
  4. Letter sounds; /a/, /m/, /t/.

Have a wonderful (long) weekend!

Weekly Update: 10-7-15

Some quick updates for you!

  1. I will be out on Friday. I will have a sub and Ms Phyllis will be here as a fourth assistant. Ms Valerie will be the go-to person. Let me know if you have any questions before I take off.
  2. In social studies this week we have been talking about thermometers. Some key words we’ve learned with this are: hot, cold, higher, lower, temperature, degrees. You can help make this lesson real by pointing out thermometers at home (any type!) or out and about.
  3. A reminder that it is ok to be sad or mad or any emotion other than happy. There are certain behaviors that are not ok, but it is ok to feel those emotions. I feel like I’m reminding about that a lot lately…feel free to remind your child as well, and to help them identify their emotions at home.

Have a great end to the week!

Weekly Update: 10-1-15

You may have heard the news, but here it is “officially.” We are hiring a fourth para! As such, I am working on a new schedule for our class. Students’ Room 125 and mainstreaming time may vary in coming weeks. Until we hire someone (which will likely take several weeks), we have a sub position open daily. So, for a while days will be more “go with the flow” as we have new people and some days of three paras and some of four. If you have any questions about this, please let me know. I am excited to start a new schedule with another team member:)

Recess Buddies is off to a good start this week. See the Recess Buddies page for that information if you haven’t yet.

I will be gone next Friday. I’m sure I’ll connect with you before that as well, but just planting the seed early.

Please let me know what questions you have!

Have a great weekend!
