What's going on in Room 125?

“Weekly” Update: 11-12-15

on November 12, 2015

Thank you to everyone who came to conferences last week! It was great to touch base with all of you and learn more about your families. Thank you for sharing and helping to brainstorm new ideas.

This week we started a new schedule fully accounting for our new team. Field trips and illness were obstacles for it to be in full effect, but I am excited about some of the changes. One of the biggest changes is having students go to lunch with their grade level instead of a segregated table. This is a natural way to have students be more included in the school community. Recess Buddies are doing great with the changes–I am constantly impressed and proud of this group of Buddies. They go above and beyond with responsibility and compassion, and a solid group of them give me constant feedback about the goings-ons at recess and how to support their Buddy.

Our 2nd grade friends during “Friendship Time” also continue to amaze me. This week we switched gears during this time a bit. For the past several weeks we have played games or had less structured time with the friends. This week, I started teaching a social skills lesson. This week we worked on introductions and it was incredible! We practiced saying “Hi, my name  is_____,” and “Nice to meet you” and shaking hands. We also practiced introducing a friend who doesn’t talk. I wish I had it on film for you! Every student in this group participated to their ability. Several of the students in this room are also going above and beyond in helping others as needed. I love the growing engagement between the students in this class and others!

We switched from Social Studies to Science and are learning about “Community.” Some big ideas we talk about are how people in a community live or work together, help each other, and use nice actions. We talked about important people in Edison’s community and now are learning about a community in Kenya.

Make sure to stay up to date on Edison happenings in Thursday folders and on the website. Next Wednesday is PJ Day–bring a dollar to raise money for the annual Penny Harvest. Next Friday is Thanksgiving Lunch and the Science Fair.

We are in need of classroom snacks! Each day we work on choice making and meeting basic needs with our “Snack or Art” time. If anyone is willing to send in a stock of snacks for the class for this time, we would much appreciate it! Favorites are goldfish, Cheerios, and crackers. We are open to new things, though! Also, if anyone has an old/spare digital clock laying around, we could give it a job!

Finally, a note about First Friday. As you know, I do a lot of “PR” in this school, talking to students and teachers about my class and how to support and include my students. I have been given the opportunity to present to all students at December’s First Friday Assembly. I have plenty to say already, but am curious about your perspective as a parent. I would love to know, if there was one thing you’d want the entire school to know about your child/children with autism/Room 125, what would it be?

Please reach out with questions, feedback, or ideas! Thanks for all you do!
