Weekly Update: 3-10-16 Extra Please Read

Hello Room 125 fans!

This is a fairly big weekly update with lots of important updates. I apologize for any information overload, but I want to make sure to get everything out there. Please let me know if you have any questions! Thanks!

  1. Touch the World was a huge success! Thank you to all who joined us for the fun evening (if you have pictures or video please send my way!). This year had the biggest Edison involvement and we raised near $1000. I sent some t-shirt designs to the print shop and am eager to see what they come up with!
  2. We started a new Social Studies unit: Native Americans. If you have any home connections for this, please let me know so we can tie into class!
  3. We are getting a new student! She will likely be starting next week. Please talk to your children about this because there will be many changes in our classroom. Students are helping with new set-up a bit in order to be involved and further understand the change. It is extra important for all of us to really praise good behavior of current students as they will be role models for Valeria and we will be working with her to learn routines. As I learn more about her and spend time getting to know her, there will be schedule changes as well. I am confident that our class will do a great job with their routines and welcoming Valeria into our classroom; let’s all work together to encourage and praise them as well!
  4. Our class has been struggling with voice volume lately. There has been lots of yelling—happy, sad, naughty, sensory, silly—and our classroom has not felt very sensory safe or conducive to learning. Some students yell in response to others, and some are quite sensitive to noise. It is imperative that we work together as a class to redefine and follow through with voice volume expectations, and again I’ll need your help! Here is a picture of our new Voice Scale. We talked about this extensively today and will continue to review it, pointing out where volumes should be and where they are. It is an expectation that voices remain at a 2 or lower in the classroom. There are situations where 3 is ok, but 4 is never ok at school. You may be familiar with some “screeching” as I’ve spoken with a few of you about that. Screeching is a 4 and never ok in school. This is how I am explaining to students. Having a consistent visual and language to approach this behavior with will help students comprehend what is and is not ok. Feel free to use the same language at home!   5. We have been fortunate enough to receive funding from the DPS Foundation A to Z fund for our horseback riding trips. We will be visiting Acres of Opportunity Ranch for 5 sessions to practice our communication, behavior, and social skills outside of the classroom. Students will have the opportunity to care for and ride horses and well as do other farm work. Because of bus limitations, some of the dates do overlap with field trips from other grade levels (I know of one from 4th and one from 3rd grade). When we get closer to those dates, we can plan individually for that. Soon I will send home waiver information that will need to be filled out prior to our visits.   6. Edison’s 125th Anniversary Open House is tonight from 6-8 pm. Join to celebrate the history of our great school!
