What's going on in Room 125?

About Us

Meet Ms. Wales

My name is Kelsey Wales and I am excited to start my fifth year as the teacher of students with autism at Edison! I moved to Denver from Columbus, Ohio in July of 2011 and have loved every minute of my time here!  I am a graduate of the Ohio State University with a degree in Education, specializing in Moderate-Intensive Intervention. I completed my Autism Certification through University of Northern Colorado last summer and am on track to wrap up my master’s degree as an Intervention Specialist in December of this year. This degree focuses on leadership and policy and special education, both of which are important when working with teams and advocating for our students! I bring many ideas to the classroom from this program, and depending on what class I’m taking you may notice some targeted excitement!

I first started working with students with autism as a volunteer with a therapeutic horseback riding program while in high school. After that, I spent two summers working at a residential camp for people with special needs. I worked with large groups, small groups, and one-on-one with kids on all ends of the autism spectrum. This is when I knew that I had found my passion!  Since then, I have worked with all sorts of students in academic and recreational settings. The past four years,  I taught in the classroom for students with autism at Edison. Before that I worked and taught in a variety of other classrooms, including a K-4 classroom in Columbus with students with moderate-intensive needs, the majority of whom were on the autism spectrum. I have spent summers as a counselor at camp, worked as an in-home tutor and therapist, a nanny, and a pre-school teacher. I found Edison in the spring of 2011 and fell in love with its strong sense of community and support.  I was thrilled to find this opening, as working with students on the spectrum is my ultimate passion.  I was also overjoyed about the prospect of moving to Colorado, since I decided I was in love with the mountains. So here I am! My time here has caused me to fall even more in love with our school’s community. As you will quickly find out, I am very passionate about community, particularly in including our students in all aspects! Every year Edison’s students and teachers blow me away with their support and acceptance our our kids. Every year I challenge myself and others to make this even more effective. Go Eagles!

We have a busy classroom, and I like to stay busy outside of it as well. I love to take advantage of everything Colorado, spending a lot of time rock climbing, running, playing with circus people, spending time with my animals, and volunteering. I live in Boulder at the foot of miles and miles of trails which I love (and need!) to run on frequently. I love getting into the canyon to climb on rocks, hike, or even just exist. In the winter I spend quite a lot of time at the climbing gym. I also spend a lot of time volunteering at the Boulder Valley Humane Society, Acres of Opportunity Ranch, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. I’m pretty spread out because I love things in both Denver and Boulder (and beyond!).  I live with my two goofball cats, Mia and Percy, and when I do spend time home I like to read with them on my patio. I also spend a lot of time with my horse, Uno, who lives at Acres of Opportunity Ranch.

If you want to know anything else about me, don’t hesitate to call or e-mail me!  I look forward to getting to know you as well!

Meet Our Paras

We are very fortunate to have three wonderful paraprofessionals on the Room 125 team!  Meet  Valerie, Alicia, and Jamie:

Valerie Labelle

Hi parents and families! I’m Valerie LaBelle, originally from Florida where my daughter, Esther was born; but we’ve lived in Colorado for about 8 years now. I have a bachelors degree in human nutrition/dietetics from Metro State University here in Denver. I just started in room 125 in January, but have been working as a para at Edison since August of this school year. My spare time is usually spent with my family (enjoying the outdoors whenever possible), spending time in the kitchen playing with recipes, taking food pictures and blogging about nutrition and wellness 🙂. I look forward to further getting to know all of you and  your kiddos as the school year progresses!
My name is Alicia, I’m 20 years old and I’m new at Edison this year. I have been working with children for over five years and would describe myself as a positive and creative person. I’m looking forward to learning all about your children and building relationships with them
Meet Our Special Service Providers
We work closely with several incredible special service providers in the classroom and on IEP teams. Your child and family’s involvement with each will vary based on needs, but all are involved in our classroom in some way. See below for more information.

Paula Mannebach (Occupational Therapist)
My name is Paula Mannebach and I have been the OT at Edison for 8 years.  I have been with DPS for almost 23 years.  I am a CSU graduate and have lived in Colorado since I was 2 (almost a native).  I am married with a nine year old son.  We like camping and hiking, but it seems most of our free time is spent with “play dates” and other kid-centered activities these days!  I work part time, but last year I ran the environmental learning program for my son’s class as well as most of the parties!

Amanda Shackleton (Psychologist)
Hi everyone! My name is Amanda and I am the School Psychology Intern at Edison! I am also brand new to the state of Colorado (I just moved from Louisiana, but I was born and raised in Florida). I received my bachelors in Psychology from Centenary College of Louisiana in 2012 and am on track to complete my Specialist in School Psychology degree in May of 2016 through Louisiana State University in Shreveport. If you have any questions about me or the work I do, please do not hesitate to reach out, I’d love to chat with you!
