A Few Monday Notes

  1. Notes in binders may be scarce today (and other days you may have noticed). Thank you for your patience with this. The job for our 4th para is still open, and as such our days are often quite busy with changing schedules. Notes sometimes get missed in this. Don’t hesitate to call with questions about your child’s day!
  2. Tomorrow is PJ Day to End Homelessness. Bring $1 and wear PJs to support this city-wide cause.
  3. Whoops….this Saturday is the Autism Walk! I know several of you are probably participating in this, so not the best Saturday for a class Jump Street event. Perhaps we can have a summer reunion? Do know that the resource is there!

Weekly Update: 4/28/16

Hello!

I just updated the calendar tab. Please check it out. Lots coming with the end of the year approaching! I will update as I know more about the end of the year happenings.  Please let me know if you’re able to come to Field Day (May 13)! Would love to have you join your child in the fun!

Last week in Thursday Folders there was an application for the CSC (a school leadership team). There are two parent positions available next year. I encourage all of you to apply. We (this comes from school administration too) would love to have a voice on our school decision making team from a parent of a child in this classroom. Our children and classroom are a meaningful part of this school and we/you should have a voice in this school beyond our room! Please let me know if you have questions. We have so many great advocates among us and you could be a great voice in this school!

Lifetouch pictures came home this week. If you would like to keep these, please send payment to school. If not, please return the pictures.

You may know/remember that Jump Street offers a private hour for families with children with disabilities the first Saturday of every month (http://www.gotjump.com/events/kids-special-needs-event-locations-9am-1st-saturday-every-month/). That is next Saturday…May 7! I was talking with some parents about meeting there then. It would be fun to have a class even there! Let me know if this would be a good Saturday for you. We meet at the Lakewood location. Also…we have classroom funds we can use to support this!

May 7 I am also performing in a circus show in Boulder. A parent asked for details about this, so here they are!   http://fractaltribe.com/events/40

“Cirque Array is a fun mix of new professional acts, first time performers, and everything in between. Cirque Array will begin with 30 minutes of variety acts followed by a short story production. Our short story show this month is Playosophy.

PLAYosophy explores the concept of play for both children and adults, and the shift of its presence over time. As we have moved into the 21st century our modern, work-obsessed society now face a screen-addiction epidemic, resulting in a loss of human connections and the appreciation for joyful, purposeless fun. We invite you to tap into your inner child and play awhile.

Suggested donation of $12”

Because of this event, I may not be able to go to Jump Street that day (late dress rehearsal the night before), but I’m going to tentatively plan on both!

Let me know if you have questions!

Schedule Updates

Hi!

A few reminders and updates about our schedule this week. Things are very different. Students did a great job with the first Go with the Flow Day, and I am very proud of them! Remind them of these changes as you can, and the importance of Going with the Flow and listening to their teachers!

Ms Valerie is no longer with us. We are conducting interviews for a new paraprofessional this week, but until then are shorthanded. On some days we may have a sub, but not always. Schedules will change to accommodate this.

Most of the week I will be out of the classroom performing PARCC testing with 4th grade. The amazing Katherine, Jamie, and Alicia will keep things going for us!

Tomorrow I need to leave right at 3:30 for an appointment. Ms Katherine will be leading dismissal. If you have questions about your child’s day, please email me or touch base on Wednesday.

On Friday we are horseback riding again! Please stay up to date with this via the “calendar” tab and remember to send your child with the necessary clothing, water, applied sunscreen, and sack lunch.

On Friday I need to leave after horseback riding. A substitute will be there to support the 2nd half of the day back at school.

Thanks for your flexibility and understanding as days will look fairly different and less consistent this week. Let me know if you have any questions!

Weekly Update: 4-7-16

Hello!

Our first trip to the ranch is tomorrow! Make sure to send students in weather and dirt appropriate clothing, including closed-toed shoes. Please send a waterbottle and pack a lunch unless you have already told me you need one from the cafeteria. If you want your child to wear sunscreen and/or take allergy medicine, please put this on/give prior to school.

A few parents have expressed interest in joining us on these trips. While this is a fun trip and I’d love for you to see your child in action, one of the main goals of this trip is also to foster independence for students. This is their chance to experience new things, have hands-on learning opportunities, and have a field trip catered to them so they do not need adults directing them all the time like at school. For this reason, I generally discourage parents from joining these trips. However, if you are interested in joining us for the first trip tomorrow, feel free to meet us at the ranch (your child must ride the bus with us, but you can meet us there in your car). When there, I encourage you to give plenty of space and take more of an observer role, as we want students to have more ownership and independence during these trips. I promise to post pictures of this and other ones! Please let me know if you are planning on coming tomorrow. Parent presence may not be appropriate for every child, so let’s make sure to have a plan in place!

Classroom updates: Two friends are leaving our classroom. Valeria (our new student) has already left for a new school. Ms Valerie is soon to embark on a new adventure at Lutheran Hospital and her last day will be next Friday. I will keep you posted as we work on hiring a new team member! (If you know anyone who may be interested, please send my way).

This is testing season. The next several weeks I will be doing a lot of individual testing of students in the upper grades. As such, there will be more “go with the flow” days and para leadership in our classroom. Let me know if you have any questions about this!

Finally, our please vote for our art classroom to win a makeover with IKEA! http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/1965768/Vote-for-Your-Favorite-Life-Improvement-Project-2016

Have a great weekend,

Ms Wales

Twin Day tomorrow UPDATE

I am going to wear gray pants/sweats tomorrow to twin with anyone who does not prefer jeans! There will still be plenty of jeans and blue shirt too, though! The default is actual jeans and Edison shirts, but I know a lot of our kids associate that with field trips, which is why I’m going with just blue.

So, blue shirt, jeans or gray pants, and sneakers will have twins for sure;)

Have a great evening!

Urgent-Acres of Opportunity Ranch Paperwork needed

Our first trip to the Ranch is this Friday. Our whole class is attending these trips (5 visits total). I must have completed paperwork for every student in order for them to attend. I am sending home another copy to those who have not returned this yet. Please return these to me tomorrow, April 6.

We are talking a lot about our trips, the rules, and what we’ll do at the ranch! Each visit is a little different, but some things we have been able to do in the past and/or may get to do this year include

-learning about horse, animal, and ranch safety

-groom horses

-lead horses

-ride horses

-feed horses, cows, pigs, chickens, goat

-ranch chores

-learn animal related subjects, such as body parts, eating, basic needs

-paint horses

-obstacle courses

And more! This is great opportunity to work on skills in a new, motivating, and real-life environment. Let me know if you have questions and please return the needed paperwork tomorrow so that your child is able to participate with our class!

Make sure to mark your calendar for our ranch trips and send your child with:

-weather and ranch appropriate clothing. Layers are important as the weather can change quickly and we go rain or shine! Have them wear clothes that can get dirty. Closed toed shoes are required.

-water bottle

-sunscreen already applied if preferred

-sack lunch (if you need this from the cafeteria, please let me know ASAP so I can order the correct amount)

-allergy medicine taken beforehand if necessary! (hay, animals, spring)

We’re getting excited for these trips! I’ll be sure to post some pictures as we go.

-Ms Wales
