Weekly Update: More Time…and an iPad!!

Spring break is almost here!  To wrap up winter we spent more time on time.  We are working together to build a big classroom clock, working on identifying numbers, the hands, and counting by fives.  There’s a lot to think about when reading a clock, so practice this skill at home!  Students who are working on number ID and counting, can count the “big” numbers.  Students who know their numbers can practice counting by fives and reading the time.  Being able to read a clock is an important life and academic skill, that will give students some independence when following a school or home schedule.  It can also help them to feel secure when they know what time to expect certain events.

This week we also got our iPad!!!  Because it is a classroom iPad that was funded through DonorsChoose, it is going to be a little bit before we get our apps (hopefully soon though!).  However, everyone is already excited. We have been using the camera and photobooth to take funny pictures of everyone. Students love it!  Already, everyone is talking so much and are so motivated by the iPad. I am eager to get our apps up and running. We have some cool opportunities coming our way!

I want to spend a minute to talk about the Recess Buddies. This program has been  amazing. We have some great fifth graders who have been great friends and role models to our students.  We will be taking a celebratory trip on Enrichment Day (May 18) where we will go on a fun outting, have a picnic lunch, and make a Recess Buddies video and yearbook. More details to come!

I hope everyone has a fun and relaxing Spring Break!  See you in April!

Weekly Update: Time and the Art Museum

Good morning!

Unfortunately, this is going to be a quick update.  My computer keyboard is malfunctioning and it takes about twice as long to type everything. Hopefully this will be fixed soon!  If you have any questions about this brief update, please call me or send me a note.  Thanks for your patience!

Time

This week we started to learn about time.  We learned that clocks have numbers and hands. Today we will learn about telling time to the hour. Next week we will expand with half hours and minutes. Practice this at home whenever possible!

Art Museum

I am so proud of how well Room 125 did at the art museum on Tuesday! We did two hour’-long tours, and everyone did a great job staying with the group and waiting.  The second’-graders we were with were great friends and helpers as well!

Tomorrow

I will have a sub tomorrow, Friday March 16. I am taking a professional day to visit 7 different schools with autism programs.  This is a great opportunity to collaborate with other teachers and to learn about the different intermediate programs, since students will transition there in third grade.

Let me know if you have any questions. Sorry for the short update!

2 Quick Updates

1. In case you didn’t see the BIG news, here it is…..our iPad project was fully funded!!! We are getting an iPad!  As I’ve said many times, this is going to have a huge impact on our room: academically, socially, and more!  Check out the project at my site: www.donorschoose.org/kelsey.wales. What an amazing program. Our Donors are really making a difference in our room!

2.  Yesterday a sheet was sent home in Thursday folders about auction items left over from Edfest.  One of the items is a hike with myself and Mr. Allen (a fifth grade teacher).  It would be great to have some of the 125 kids join us!  Mr. Allen’s class participates in the Recess Buddies program, so it would be fun to be able to join forces on this hike.  Plus, you could have some fun free time for an afternoon too:)  Follow the directions on the sheet for bidding, or just let me know if you’re interested!  I’d love to spend some weekend time with some of my favorite kiddos!

Horseback riding was amazing yesterday. Gorgeous weather, all the students, and tons of smiles.  Thank you for sending everyone prepared!

Have a great weekend!

Weekly Update: Horses

This week all of our activities were about horses!  Today was our first trip to Acres of Opportunity ranch.  Despite the cold and snowy weather, everyone had a great time!  I was so proud of all of the Room 125 cowboys.  Check out the photos section to see all the fun we had!  We groomed horses, rode them, did an obstacle course, played horseback follow the leader, fed the horses and chickens, and collected chicken eggs.  Everyone got to take home an egg…so keep an eye out for it!  We also got to bring a saddle and brushes back to our classroom, which students will be able to explore and work for for the next few months.

We will be keeping a journal about our experiences at the ranch, so that your child can share their experiences with you.  This is such a cool opportunity for our room, and I’m very excited for our students!

Field Trip!

Room 125 is really getting out in the world! Not only are we going on horseback riding trips, we are going to the art museum!  We will be joining the second grade class on March 13 from 9:15-12:45.  Please sign and return the permission slip for the trip. I am sending it home in folders today.
